Handheld Tour

You do not need to join a ranger-guided tour when you have your own handheld tour guide – a GPS Ranger – with you on the trail

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own tour guide when visiting national parks? Many national park visitors join ranger-guided tours to learn more about park history, geology and wildlife. Fewer ranger-led activities are available today, however, due to budget cuts and understaffing. Fortunately, renting a handheld tour guide – a GPS Ranger – will make you feel like you have a park ranger with you. By carrying a GPS Ranger, you can listen to the same information a park ranger would provide, but you can go at your own pace.

Utilizing Global Positioning System technology, the handheld guide delivers video presentations about points of interest along a trail or scenic drive as you approach them. For example, when you hike the Bright Angel Point Trail at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, you will learn about the Grand Canyon Lodge, the path’s trailhead, as well as scenery viewed from the panoramic vista at the end of the trail, including Roaring Springs and Bright Angel Canyon.

The handheld tour guide, offered by GeoQuest, is available for rental not only at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, but also at Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park. All three are crown jewels in the National Park Service’s crown. It is possible to visit all three in the same trip. If you want to enrich your hiking excursions in these national parks, rent a GPS Ranger. When you return home, you will take with you more than images of spectacular scenery in your mind. You will also know the story behind it!
